Hector Bonnington-Jones, a 12-year-old cat, has spoken of his “deep remorse and regret” after posting a defamatory restaurant review on Tripadvisor.
Bonnington-Jones wrote the review after the upmarket Chester restaurant he had been frequenting every night for six years had a change of management and “insulted” him with “appalling” service.
“I’ve never been so humiliated in all my life,” he wrote. “I’ve been coming here for years. Every evening I position myself in my usual seat, on a low wall just outside the kitchen, and the chef feeds me my usual – fish heads, which happens to be the finest item on the menu.
“Imagine my shock and disappointment, then, when I took my seat and was roundly ignored by a group of… of… of…. people I’d never seen before.
“As if that wasn’t insulting enough, when I popped my head round the kitchen to prompt them into action, I was told to ‘shooh’. To shooh! Like a common criminal.”
Bonnington-Jones said he stood by most of what he wrote, but felt he should apologise for subsequently claiming that the restaurant was full of rat droppings and that he’d seen a dog scratching its bottom on a chopping board.
“It was a moment of madness, which I regret bitterly,” he told The Lab Report.
The restaurant’s manager said she had no plans to take legal action.
